Workers Memorial Day

FIFTY YEARS AGO on April 28, Workers Memorial Day, the Occupational Safety and Health Act went into effect, promising every worker the right to a safe job. The law was won because of the tireless efforts of the labor movement, which organized for safer working conditions and demanded government action. Unions and our allies have fought hard to make that promise a reality—winning protections that have made jobs safer and saved lives. But our work is not done. Each year, thousands of workers are killed and millions suffer injury or illness because of dangerous working conditions.

Chauvin Verdict a First Step Toward Racial Justice and Equality

Statement by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), AFL-CIO

Today, justice was partially served with the conviction of George Floyd's uniformed killer and is a first step toward racial justice and equality in this country. OPEIU expresses condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Floyd, whose life was stolen from him by a police officer enabled by an unjust set of systems and institutions that will continue to claim the lives of our neighbors and loved ones -- until we put a stop to it.

Stop Asian Hate

We call on our union members to stand by our Asian American brothers and sisters who have been blamed for the pandemic, which resulted in a surge of harassment, attacks, battery and even deaths locally and across the country. We know there are Asian Americans on the frontline saving lives as we speak and working diligently to help move our country into normalcy as we finally get control of this disease.  Asian Americans are union members who work with us in our offices, hospitals, grocery stores, schools, hotels, and public transportation, to name a few.  We vow to continue to stand-side-by side in solidarity and we strongly denounce these disgusting and cowardly acts of violence.  Let's not forget that an injury to one is an injury to all.
