Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration Month

In alignment with our values and commitment to diversity and inclusion of opportunity for all, The Social Economic Racial Justice Committee (SERJ) acknowledges, honors, supports, and celebrates in the month of May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Mental Health Awareness Month.

SERJ recognizes our brothers and sisters who stood with us shoulder-to-shoulder on the frontlines as we fought back a pandemic and marched with thousands of union members on May Day 2021 in our shared fight for human rights, social, economic, and racial justice. We celebrate Larry Itliong, Philip Vera Cruz and Pete Valasco, among many other Filipino Americans who were considered to be the heart and soul of the grape strike walkout in 1965. This walkout eventually led to the merging of two unions and the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW), which was initially chaired by Larry Itliong and Cesar Chavez, and broadened the civil rights aspect of the labor movement. It is our shared commitment in the fight for equity that joins us in solidarity and makes the labor movement stronger. Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
